North Londoners’ eyeing £10m swoop for Brazilian.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has identified unsettled Bayern Munich midfield player Luiz Gustavo as being his number one target for the January transfer window, according to reports in Germany.
The highly-talented Brazil international has endured an in-and-out season with the Bundesliga giants to date, barely featuring for Jupp Heynckes’s in-form side of late and fears that from now until the summer first-team opportunities at the Allianz Arena will become few and far between due to the Bavarians imperious form.
And that has persuaded Wenger to step up his interest in the 25-year-old, believing that the North Londoners may be able to take advantage of the Brazilian’s current unhappiness at Bayern to land him for a cut-price fee.
Gustavo only arrived in Munich from Hoffenheim in January 2011 for a fee of £12 million, but the Gunners are hopeful of persuading their German counterparts to allow the defensive midfield player to depart for a price somewhere in the region of £10m
And if that were to happen, it would represent a canny bit of business by the Premier League giants, with Wenger reportedly keen to try Gustavo out alongside Abo Diaby in a role in front of the back four.
