Arsenal set to allow promising midfielder to depart Emirates Stadium on loan.
Arsenal are to send Francis Coquelin on loan to Real Betis, according to Spanish source TodoMercado.
If Coquelin is allowed to leave, Arsene Wenger will surely buy a midfield general this January transfer window.
The Gunners’ need for an enforcer in the middle of the park was crystal clear in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Sunday, particularly in the first half when they were run ragged.
After Coquelin’s strong performance alongside Abou Diaby in the Arsenal midfield against Swansea in their FA Cup replay, there were high hopes amongst the north London team’s fans that they would be able to perform to a similarly high level against Chelsea.
It wasn’t to be though, and perhaps this is what has convinced Wenger that a half-season of regular football at Real Betis would be a good idea.
Arsenal and Betis have a good relationship, with young forward Joel Campbell currently on loan with the La Liga club and performing well.
It is believed that the Gunners would then look to sign a more experienced ball winner for the defensive midfield slot, with the likes of Victor Wanyama, Yann M’Vila and Etienne Capoue.
