Mertesacker is keen to make sure his German counterpart settles in.
Since signing for Arsenal for £42.4m on transfer deadline day, Mesut Ozil has been impressive for the Gunners and has helped them to an incredible run of 10 straight wins.
However, domestic and national team-mate Per Mertesacker says the defender will be there to help out the attacking midfielder with any off-field problems.
“Mesut can play football, that is what his aim is to be here to do, so it is just the little details.,” the Germany international was quoted by the Mirror.
“It is things like how to get on in London, how to come to the training ground, to get to wherever he wants to go. It is just a quick call or a text, you can help him out.
“I need to help because it is very important to get him into the squad quickly, so that he can adapt and play with freedom.”
Ozil has had support at the Emirates Stadium from fellow Germans Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski – which is something the centre-back did not enjoy when arriving from Werder Bremen in 2011.
The 29-year-old was criticised in that first season for being too slow and immobile, but has developed since then and is now part of an established central defensive partnership with Laurent Koscielny – with club captain Thomas Vermaelen pushed to the bench.
With such support in north London, Ozil should be able to settle in quickly and the Gunners will be the ones reaping the rewards of the 24-year-old’s progression in the long-term.
