Mertesacker reveals pictures that prove he has been a fan of the club since being a boy.
There is some good news for Arsenal as key defender Per Mertesacker has signed a new contract with the club after long negotiations.
The German has become a key figure at the Emirates Stadium since making the £8m move from Werder Bremen in 2011 and alongside Laurent Koscielny, is considered by many to be one half of the best central defensive partnerships in the Premier League.
Mertesacker is clearly delighted to have signed a new deal and has revealed that despite being from Germany, is a lifelong fan of the north London side.
“It was easy for me to commit myself to the Club,” the 29-year-old told the club’s website.
“I have been here for two and a half lovely years, with full support and full dedication from a lot of people, so I am really looking forward to having more years coming up with this fantastic club.
“On my first visit to England as a boy I brought an Arsenal jersey as a souvenir and was so proud wearing it when playing football with my friends.
“Many years later, I have become a real Gunner, being even more proud to wear the Arsenal jersey.
“I am truly thankful to the Club and all the supporters for the time I have had here so far. And today I am deeply proud to have extended my contract with Arsenal. I’m proud to be a Gunner.”
Just to prove this isn’t just a fabricated cliche the Germany international has also tweeted the proof of his childhood support.
As a young boy and now-very proud to be a gunner! Thanks fans for your support. Happy to have extended with @Arsenal pic.twitter.com/rsT92OM8kU
