Arsene Wenger finally set to spend big this summer…
Arsenal are set to swoop for highly rated 19-year-old German wonderkid Julian Draxler, reports the Mirror.
Reports claim the Gunners have already made an enormous £40m offer, which would make the 19-year-old one of the most expensive players of all time, but his club Schalke are holding out for a ludicrous £60m.
Draxler recently signed a new contract to ward off bidders, but Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is desperate to appease fans with a marquee signing before the transfer window slams shut on Monday evening.
The attacking midfielder has six caps for Germany already, and is already an integral part of Schalke’s first-team. Quite rightly, he is regarded as one of the hottest properties in Europe, and unsurprisingly, two European giants came in for him last month.
Draxler could have moved to Manchester City or Real Madrid this summer, but decided to continue his development in his home country, reports German newspaper Bild.
“I racked my brain over the offers. You do not know if you will ever again get such deals in life,” said the teenage prodigy.
“Ultimately, my gut, my heart and perspective were the decisive factor in my decided to stay at Schalke.”
Arsenal then will do well to tempt either his club or the player into finalising a deal in such a short space of time, but the German’s have just signed a possible direct-replacement in Ghanain powerhouse Kevin Prince-Boateng, which could help negotiations.
If the Draxler deal proves impossible, Arsenal reamin hopeful that the Gareth Bale to Real Madrid deal could see world-class trio Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria come on the market.
