Arsene Wenger aware that defence needs protection at Emirates Stadium, and looks set to swoop to sign Bundesliga enforcer.
Arsenal are scouting Eintracht Frankfurt star Pirmin Schwegler, fanatix has learned.
The Switzerland international has shone for the Bundesliga side in defensive midfield, and could certainly do a similar job for the Gunners.
Arsene Wenger hasn’t had a true destroyer in midfield since the likes of Gilberto Silva and Mathieu Flamini, with Alexandre Song more of a playmaker than an anchor player.
Mikel Arteta has performed well at the base of Arsenal’s midfield for the last two seasons, but sometimes doesn’t receive a great deal of assistance from his team-mates when it comes to the less glamorous work of winning the ball back.
Indeed, sometimes Arteta is targeted by opposition managers – ‘Stop Arteta and you stop Arsenal’ – and Arsene Wenger appears set to attempt to solve that problem with a move for an additional defensive player – with Schwegler top of the list.
The 25 year-old Swiss star is very disciplined in his positioning (but sometimes less so in his tackling), good in the air and a decent passer.
Though he doesn’t get forward too often, he can unleash a powerful shot from range when he does join the attack.
He is also the current captain of Eintracht Frankfurt, meaning that the constant criticism of Arsenal lacking leadership could be alleviated.
The only downfall is that Schwegler has suffered a fair few injuries in the last few years, though Wenger will hope that with only two notable absences in the last two years – each time out for about a fortnight – he is over those.
Schwegler has eleven caps for Switzerland.
