The ‘Cavani to Arsenal’ bandwagon is in full swing…
Arsenal are planning a big money move for 25-year-old Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, according to the Independent.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed his interest in forward Edinson Cavani, valued at £45m, and is understood to be readying a move for the Uruguayan international, which will smash the club’s current club record transfer fee.
Wenger stated: “Cavani is a player that I like. Will he cost a lot of money? That’s for sure. Nobody would deny that.”
He added: “Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.”
Earlier this month, the Frenchman stated his intention to break a habit of a lifetime by spending bigger sums on players, due in part with the financial burden of the move to the Emirates Stadium lessening.
His intention is to keep his current squad and add “maybe, if possible, two new players”.
Cavani, formerly of Palermo, has scored an astonishing 25 goals in 23 games in all competitions this season, following 33 goals in each of the last two seasons at the San Paolo.
Arsenal have relied on summer signing Olivier Giroud to lead the line so far this campaign but have opted to hand Theo Walcott a striking role in recent weeks, with mixed results.
Cavani saw team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi sold to PSG and may well feel that the time is right for a new challenge.
Napoli sit in third spot in Serie A, five points behind leaders Juventus, chiefly due to Cavani’s goal, which presently make him the top scorer in the Italian top tier.
