One of Arsenal’s most unheralded stars commits to long term Emirates Stadium future after being offered a huge deal double his previous salary.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has signed a new £20 million deal, according to the Sun.
The 6’5″ Poland international has been largely unheralded this season, with stars such as Per Mertesacker, Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud receiving most of the media attention.
However, apart from a mindless sprint out of his area against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season, it is hard to recall a moment where Szczesny put a foot wrong this season.
Two wondrous saves against Crystal Palace kept the Gunners ahead at 1-0 when down to ten men after Mikel Arteta’s sending off, and the 23 year-old’s concentration, shot-stopping and command of his area have all improved immeasurably.
Szczesny has publicly declared the turning point in his young career to be the moment he was dropped for Arsenal’s match away to Bayern Munich last season, and since then it has been quite clear that he has knuckled down and worked incredibly hard, winning back his place upon injury to Lukasz Fabianski.
The Sun report that Szczesny’s deal runs for four years after this season, with the Pole set to receive £100,000 per week, earning a similar figure to some of the best paid players in his position in the world.
With more than £20 million outlayed on Szczesny between now and 2018, the Gunners will certainly hope that he can live up to his salary.
