Real Madrid striker close to Emirates Stadium switch.
Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain is close to joining Arsenal, according to the Argentinian’s father.
Jorge Higuain said negotiations over a club-record £22m move to the Emirates were “at an advanced stage” but stressed his son was yet to sign a contract with the Gunners.
“Nothing has yet been signed but I assure you the negotiations between the clubs are at an advanced stage,” Higuain senior told The Sun.
“We won’t agree a contract before the clubs reach a transfer deal. I’m sure Arsenal made a big offer, and Juventus.”
Arsenal current record transfer is the £15m they paid Zenit St. Petersburg from Andrei Arshavin in 2009. The Russian is set to leave north London on a free transfer on July 1.
Higuain has made no secret of his desire to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer but the 25-year-old has been a big success since joining from River Plate in 2005.
Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have netted more goals in La Liga in that time and the powerful Argentina international also bagged 16 goals in just 19 league starts for Los Blancos this season.
