Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that the club tried to bring a teenage Lionel Messi to North London when they signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, report BBC Sport, but the Gunners failed in their bid to lure both the Argentine superstar and teammate Gerard Pique.

Messi would, of course, go on to become the best player in the world during his time at the Nou Camp and is perhaps the ultimate example of the ‘one that got away’ for Arsenal, although Fabregas didn’t do too badly during his time at the Emirates Stadium either!
