The Frenchman thinks Ozil’s influence will be a major boost.
When Robert Pires was at Arsenal the club were the best in the country and secured successive Premier League titles in 2003 and 2004.
However, since the FA Cup victory in 2005 the side have failed to secure a single piece of silverware, but Pires believes the arrival of Mesut Ozil will change all that.
The Germany international made the move to the Emirates Stadium on transfer deadline day for a record fee of £42.4m from Real Madrid.
Pires thinks that the influence of Ozil can help the Gunners lift the title for the first time in a decade.
“It’s possible [for Arsenal to win] because now the young players have grown up and have more experience,” the Frenchman told Goal.
“They also have a good mix for [Arsene] Wenger. If you put Ozil in the middle, I think it’s a very good mix for Arsenal.
“[Ozil’s] a very good player, he plays for the German national team, he played for Real Madrid, now he’s playing for Arsenal. He has the experience. I think the football will be more simple now.
“Seriously, I think Arsenal have a good potential to win the Premiership.”
It’s been a good start for the north London outfit in 2013/14 – in fact their best in five years – as after a disappointing opening day defeat to Aston Villa at home, the side have won every match since and sit top of the table.
Whether Wenger’s men can sustain that form is unknown, but Ozil has certainly inspired a turn in fortune; as shown by three assists against Stoke City on Sunday in a 3-1 win.
