Wenger makes approach for Barcelona striker.
Sources close to the club have told Fanatix that Arsenal have begun talks with Barcelona over a move for Spanish international David Villa.
The striker has been linked with a number of Premiership clubs in recent weeks, including Swansea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea, but Arsenal now appear to have taken the lead in the race for the player’s signature.
Arsenal are still searching for a striker following the departure of Robin Van Persie to Manchester United during the summer.
The replacements they recruited, such as Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, have failed to impress and Wenger is ready to move once more.
An approach for Atletico striker Adrian Lopez has been knocked back leading to Wenger looking at alternative options.
Arsenal have reportedly lost ground in the race for Wilfried Zaha and so are preparing to sneak in and secure the Barca number seven, who can play anywhere across the attacking line.
The Gunners are currently lying in 6th place in the table, four points off the coveted 4th spot that would provide Champions League football.
Another slow start to the campaign has hampered the Gunners season but Wenger is hoping to placate Arsenal fans with a big name signing.
Barcelona are said to be holding out for a transfer fee of around £14 million and Arsene Wenger has been told he has money to spend meaning Villa could be gracing the turf at the Emirates Stadium before the end of the month.
