Gunners defender hoping to leave Emirates Stadium for a club in the south of France.
Sebastien Squillaci could leave Arsenal sooner than expected after AC Ajaccio confirmed their interest in the 32 year-old.
Squillaci arrived at Emirates Stadium as a France international defender, who had won trophies in both his home country and in Spain with Sevilla.
However, it has never quite worked out for him at Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger appears willing to let him leave on a free transfer.
“I will be out of contract at the end of the season,” said Squillaci recently.
“Under the proposals, I will leave. Perhaps during the January transfer window or else I will wait for the month of June. Of course, to go back to PACA (Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur) – where I am from – is something that interests me.
“Marseille, Nice, Monaco, Bastia or Ajaccio are clubs that speak to me. I am 32 years old. I still have two or three good seasons do. On the French Riviera or elsewhere. I will choose depending on the opportunities that arise.”
Fortunately for Squillaci, the feelings are mutual when it comes to AC Ajaccio, who are hoping to make a bid as soon as possible.
Ajaccio sporting director Patrick Vernet was asked about the club’s plans for both Squillaci and Bordeaux right back Matthieu Chalmé.
“Matthieu Chalmé and Sébastien Squillaci? These are two players that interest us,” confirmed Vernet.
“But we have not made any contact with them yet. We’ll see, no door is closed,” he said, adding that any arrival was subject to a departure.”
