Barcelona star revealed to want to leave Camp Nou, but Arsenal fans might have to wait to see him at Emirates Stadium.
Barcelona have been rocked by the news that Victor Valdes wants to leave Camp Nou at the end of his contract, according to Eurosport.
Eurosport cite journalist Quim Domenech, who revealed Valdes’ change of heart on Spanish television programme Punto Pelota yesterday evening.
According to Domenech, there is no issue financially.
Valdes feels he needs a new challenge in a different league, and the Spain international – who turns 31 years-old on January 14th – could be set for a move to England with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United likely to be keen.
There have been plenty of reports since the summer that Sir Alex Ferguson is seeking to replace David de Gea after losing faith in the Spaniard, while Anders Lindegaard doesn’t seem like he will ever be more than a backup at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have struggled to find a reliable goalkeeper in recent years, with plenty of hope invested in Poland international Wojciech Szczesny but an inconsistent return.
Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone are far less convincing still, and Valdes could be a safer interim until Szczesny is ready to take the reins again.
Of course, that will depend on whether Barcelona will agree to sell Valdes before the end of his contract, which expires in 2014.
Whilst unlikely in January, that could well happen this summer.
