Gunners plotting move for talented Wigan midfielder.
Arsenal are set to test Wigan’s resolve with an £8million move for 22-year-old midfielder James McCarthy.
Liverpool and Everton are also big fans, but Wigan will fight hard to keep the Republic of Ireland star until the summer.

Arsenal suffered a blow this week when midfield target Lewis Holtby signed for North London rivals Tottenham – just hours after boss Arsene Wenger had admitted he was an admirer of the 22-year-old German midfielder.
The Schalke playmaker may have slipped through the net, but the Gunners are reportedly ready to move for a player far closer to home – namely Wigan’s James McCarthy.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez has a reputation for naturing talent and in recent seasons the Spaniard has been forced to sell the likes of Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia and Victor Moses to the Premier League big-boys.
It seems inevitable that McCarthy will be the next star to leave the DW Stadium, after some fine performances so far this term.
The young pass-master, 22, has stood out in a central midfield role for Martinez’s side and, with his fine technique and array of passing, McCarthy looks a great fit for the Gunners.
But Arsenal fans will surely feel that there are greater priorities than the young Republic of Ireland international.
After all, a technical central midfielder, with average goal-scoring statistics, is hardly what the North Londoners need at present, given that Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are already on the club’s books.
Indeed, Wenger should be first and foremost targeting a striker and a pair of full-backs this month.
McCarthy is talented but for Arsenal, at least, he is not a priority.
