Gunners linked with move for Blues stalwart.Arsenal could be prepared to make a surprise bid for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic as they eye a new signing to replace Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Metro.
The Serbian international, who has been at Stamford Bridge since 2008, can also fill in at right-back and could be an ideal transfer for the Gunners as they have also recently been dealt the blow of Bacary Sagna signing for rivals Manchester City on a free.
Meanwhile, Vermaelen has supposedly agreed terms on a move to Manchester United this week, though Arsene Wenger has put the deal on hold until the club can find a replacement to come in in defence.
Ivanovic could face a tougher time getting into Jose Mourinho’s starting lineup next season, with the arrival of a new left-back likely to push Cesar Azpilicueta out to the right-hand side, while youngster Kurt Zouma will provide cover for John Terry and Gary Cahill in the middle.
Still, it seems unlikely that Chelsea will sell a key player to a major rival, with Mourinho blocking Demba Ba’s proposed loan switch to the Gunners last summer.
