Arsene Wenger desperate for world-class French striker…
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger knows Karim Benzema will only sign if Real Madrid land former Gunners target Luis Suarez, reports the Guardian.
With a week left of the transfer window, Arsenal are trying desperately to sign a forward, having missed out on Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez earlier in the summer.
Interestingly, manager Wenger knows that his hopes of landing new target Benzema rely on Madrid bringing in Suarez as a replacement.
“I don’t want to speak in detail about that,” Wenger said when asked about Suarez.
“It’s not the moment. One day, why not? I’ve just said it’s over. We have to get on with our lives. You seem to know as much as I know about the situation so I don’t think we need for me to clarify that. You’ve certainly tried to go out with a girl and find she has chosen someone else. You don’t commit suicide.”
“That’s part of the fact you need three agreements for anybody,” continued the French boss.
“It’s true that it is sometimes connected with other clubs. But we have to accept that.”
Suarez, the enigmatic Uruguayan Liverpool striker, wants to leave Anfield to play Champions League football – which both Arsenal or Real Madrid could offer him. Liverpool have refused to sell the player to a Premier League rival though, meaning the only possibility of him leaving lies in Madrid’s hands.
After selling Higuain to Napoli, Madrid are undercooked upfront – so a move for Suarez would make sense. However, Los Blancos are focussed on their pursuit of prime target Gareth Bale, and would seemingly only move for Suarez as an alternative.
As Wenger admits, Arsenal’s hopes of signing the French forward essentially rely on Madrid failing to sign Bale, and thus moving for Suarez – meaning Benzema would come on the market.
