Wenger mulling over cut-price swoop for injury-plagued Lyons playmaker.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is mulling over a surprise move for unwanted Olympic Lyonnais midfield player Yoann Gourcuff, according to reports in the Metro.
The some-time France international has endured yet another injury-ravaged campaign with the Ligue 1 giants, and as yet has not even started a match for the club this season, although that has apparently not put the North Londoners off as they attempt to bring in new players in the January transfer window in order to beef up their under-performing squad.
The 28-year-old, who signed for Lyons from Bordeaux for £20 million four years ago, is being offered to any takers for a bargain £3m, however, there is one stumbling block in that any interested party would still need to cover his enormous £4m-a-year salary.
It has long been known that Wenger is a huge admirer of the playmaker, despite his appalling recent injury record, and the Frenchman feels that if Arsenal’s medical department can get the mercurial player on the field of play, then the Gunners will benefit enormously.
Arsenal reportedly face stiff competition for Gourcuff’s signature from Russian outfit Spartak Moscow, although Wenger and Co hold all the aces as the Russian’s are unable to offer the Frenchman Champions League football, unlike the Londoners.
