Wenger not interested in ‘average’ players.
Arsene Wenger has dismissed suggestions Arsenal need to strengthen their midfield and says he will not buy an ‘average’ player before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
QPR vs Arsenal tickets are still available for the London derby at Loftus Road on 4 May!
The Gunners have coped for most of the season without the club’s only recognised defensive midfielder, Abou Diaby, who has only recently recovered from a thigh injury sustained in October.
In the Frenchman’s absence, playmaker Mikel Arteta has been forced to play a deeper role, with the Spaniard’s creativity suffering as a result.
Arsenal have been linked with a host of midfielders, most prominently West Ham’s Mohamed Diame, who is available for just £3.5m, but Wenger insists he will only sign a ‘top quality’ midfield player this month.
“I give you our midfield: Diaby, Wilshere, Ramsey. International football players. You have Arteta – the calibre of an international footballer,” the Arsenal boss is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“You have Walcott, you have Podolski with over 100 international caps. What do you do? You say, just buy one.
“But you have to buy one better than we already have. We have Cazorla… fantastic football players.
“You need to buy a player who can compete with them for a position in the team. I have to try not to get caught up in that in January. People expect us to buy someone of top quality.
“But I have to be strong enough to resist or you have a player for four or five years who will never play a game, just because you bring in an average player who you know at the start is average.
“If I do that, I don’t do my job.”
