The Gunners’ need to strengthen this month has never been more evident than in recent weeks, and the 2-0 loss to Manchester City confirmed a gap in class between Arsenal and the title challengers.
Of course, the sending off of Laurent Koscielny after ten minutes didn’t help matters, but still, Arsenal’s need for recruitment was evident long before that match.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, later broadcast on talkSPORT, Wenger confirmed that he still has big plans for the January transfer window.
“We want to add two new players, and we are willing to spend big,” said Wenger.
Wenger added that thanks to the club almost having paid off the last of the Emirates Stadium loans, the purse strings will be loosened.
“We have been restricted financially because of the stadium – that is now coming to a close.”
With Manchester United announcing their 44th sponsorship deal today with Wahaha, the Chinese soft drinks company, Arsenal still have much work to do off the pitch commercially if they are to match their illustrious rivals for revenue.
However, there remains a catch-22.
Without success on the field, sponsors will be less likely to invest in the team, so perhaps now is the time for Arsenal to gamble on spending – and spending big.
