Spanish club to offer striker to Premier League giants.
Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has flown to London in a bid to sell star striker Alvaro Negredo to Arsenal or Tottenham, reports the Daily Mirror.
The Spanish club’s chief is said to have landed at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 at 2pm on Thursday and will reportedly tour the Capital in an attempt to flog the former Real Madrid forward.
Negredo is Sevilla’s prized asset but, with European qualification looking increasingly unlikely and the club’s financial situation bleak, del Nido has been forced to raise much-needed funds.
Negredo, 27, has been on fine form this season, bagging 8 goals in just 16 appearances in La Liga.
The World Cup winner was reportedly the subject of a bid from Tottenham on August transfer deadline day and, with Emmanuel Adebayor set to join Togo at the African Cup of Nations this week, Spurs are in dyer need of striking reinforcements.
Neighbours Arsenal, meanwhile, have also been linked with a host of strikers including Negredo’s fellow Spain internationals Adrian Lopez and David Villa of Atetico Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
But the Gunners could be tempted to move for the powerful Negredo, particularly if del Nido is willing to offer a bargain price for the hitman.
The Mirror’s Spanish correspondent David Cartlidge revealed that the Sevilla is looking to address its rising debt levels, by offloading the striker and a number of other stars.
“Sevilla’s shareholder meeting in December was their most alarming in years as it was the first time in Del Nido’s tenure, since assuming the Presidency in 2002, that the club had announced a loss,” claimed Cartlidge.
“[The debt] was €15m, and possibly up to €22m. And as of June 2012, debt stands at €49m.
“Del Nido said during the meeting in December there is a need to sell, and €16m is the target.
“Despite his recent denials, the figures don’t lie about Sevilla’s predicament and it’s clear the most saleable assets are Negredo, Medel, Fazio, Jesus Navas and Ivan Rakitic.”
