Former Everton ‘keeper Southall doesn’t hold back with his opinions.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas may be one of the most highly decorated footballers in history, but Everton great Neville Southall does not rate the Spaniard.
Both Arsenal and Manchester City have shown interest in Casillas as the Premier League duo look to improve between the sticks, but Southall disagrees with that decision.
“He is useless. I can’t see what people see in him,” the former Toffees stopper wrote in his column.
“He’s got away with murder behind that Real Madrid and Spain team for years. I’d have Joe Hart over him any day of the week. He’s twice the goalie Casillas is.”
Joe Hart has come in for serious criticism of late for making too many mistakes for the Citizens and the 26-year-old’s place as England No.1 is even under threat.
Hart was directly at fault for two of Bayern Munich’s goals, as the Germans cruised past City 1-3 at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Casillas meanwhile has only just made it back into the Madrid first team after Diego Lopez was preferred for the start of this season.
Despite this the Spain captain has had one of the most successful careers ever seen, winning the Champions League twice, La Liga five times, the European Championship twice and the World Cup – as well as being the nation’s most capped player with 150 to date.
Yet in Southall’s opinion City would be stupid to consider swapping Hart for Casillas.
