Police have recovered Melbourne’s 1948 premiership flag after it was put up for sale on eBay.
A missing 1948 VFL (Victorian Football League) flag has been recovered by police after being put up for sale on eBay.
The flag appeared on eBay this week with a starting price of $80,000.
It was awarded to the Demons after they beat Essendon by 39 points in the league’s first ever Grand Final replay.
Acting Superintendent Michael Tranby said the flag was found rural New South Wales town of Moama.
“Policemen went to an address in Moama and searched the house and found the flag that was for sale on eBay,” he told Fairfax Media.
Superintendent Tranby said the pennant was in a delicate state and was being kept by police, whilst plans were being made for its return to Victoria.
“I’d describe it as fragile,” he said.
“We’re trying to preserve it as much as we can so when it gets returned back to Victoria and wherever it ends up, it remains in good condition.”
