AC Milan face bitter city rivals Inter at San Siro on Sunday night, with both teams still pushing to secure a place in the Europa League for next season.
It has been a disappointing season for both sides this year who have fallen below expectations of challenging for a top-three finish in Serie A and have in turn had to re-think their objectives.
Both are going through transitional periods and have preached the requirement for patience and time to rebuild, and while the Nerazzurri look favourites to make the Europa League, a win here for Milan would close the gap with two games remaining.
Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has been under intense pressure at times this season, but owner Erick Thohir insists that he still backs him and will give him the opportunity to strengthen the squad further in the summer.
However, all is not well in the Rossoneri camp, as the club have failed to publicly back Clarence Seedorf who suffered a disastrous loss to Roma last time out which ended a positive run of results.
The Dutchman has arguably failed to fully convince since being appointed back in January, and the spotlight will be on both him and Mario Balotelli to restore some pride on Sunday night.
Fifth place is the target as sixth would result in a clash of schedules with pre-season commitments and qualifying rounds, although there has been speculation that European football might still not be enough for Seedorf to save his job.
Stephan El Shaarawy returns to the squad after a four-month injury lay-off, but it will be Balotelli who leads the line for the ‘hosts’ against his former club.
La Gazzetta dello Sport have tried to build this up as a ‘battle of the bad boys’ with Balotelli and Mauro Icardi, but neither will be thinking too much about that with the three points the main objective.
