Wigan are set to sign Sportin Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza after the US side’s manager Peter Vermes reaveled the 26-year-old had ‘basically’ decided to join the Latics.
Espinoza caught the eye at the London 2012 Olympics, running the show for the Honduran side that stunned Spain in the group stage.
The midfielder maestro has been linked with a host of Premier League and European clubs since the summer but Vermes confirmed that Espinoza was keen to join compatriot Maynor Figueroa at the DW Stadium.
“He called and told me that he’s basically decided that he’s going to Wigan,” Vermes told the Kansas City Star.
“It was a tough decision for him, but it’s something that he wanted to do. He wanted a chance to play in the English Premier League, but he also wanted to thank me and the club for everything.”
He added: “I told him I really appreciated his commitment to the club.
“He’s been a great guy on and off the field for us for several years. His growth as a player has been tremendous. I told him we’re happy for him, but that the doors are open if things change in the future.”
Wigan also had Hoduran international Wilson Palacios on their books before the midfielder joined Tottenham.
