Whitney Houston lines up for special AMA award

Whitney Houston's involvement at the 37th American Music Awards has just been taken to a whole new level as she is preparing to receive a special award, the International Music Award, at the show on 22nd November in Los Angeles. This award has only been presented seven times in the event's 37-year-long history,to artists who in the organisers' opinion have reached truly global superstar status. Previous recipients include Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Madonna and Beyonce Knowles, a list that is perhaps as notable for its omissions as it is for its inclusions.
Nevertheless, the award can be seen as recognition of Ms Houston's salvation from a drug- and booze-fuelled trip to the brink of oblivion in the late '90s, despite signing the biggest record deal the world had ever seen, with Arista/BMG, in 2001. Despite these erratic shenanigans she continued to record and perform in smaller tours in the early 2000s, but her self-destructive behaviour surfaced again in 2005, plumbing what many saw as a new low by appearing on a US TV reality show with her then-husband, Bobby Brown. Yet this execrable train-crash of a programme did not extinguish interest in her music; she laid down a new album in 2007, rejoined the interview circuit in 2008 and then announced her first full-scale tour for over a decade. The I Look To You tour comes to the UK on 8 April 2010 until the end of that month. Tickets to Whitney Houston concerts in the UK and Ireland are available to compare and buy now at tixdaq.com.
