Tiger Woods pulls out of the 2011 US Open at Congressional

Former world No 1 Tiger Woods has announced that he will not be competing at this years US Open, which gets under way at the Congressional Country Club on Thursday.

The American, who has featured in every US Open since 1994 and who won the last of his 14 majors at the 2008 event, sustained a sprain to his left knee and mild strain to his left Achilles tendon during the third round of the US Masters in April.
"I am extremely disappointed I won't be playing in the US Open," Woods said on his personal website.
"But it's time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future. I was hopeful I could play but, if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg.
"It's been a frustrating and difficult year, but I'm committed to my long-term health.
"I want to thank the fans for their encouragement and support. I am truly grateful and will be back playing when I can."
