Spanish midfield legend could be heading to the Middle East after reportedly being offered bumper contract.
Spanish midfield maestro Xavi is currently preparing for his nation’s attempt to retain the 2014 FIFA World Cup title, but he could be set for a shocking transfer once he returns home from Brazil.
Spanish newspaper Marca is reporting quotes from a football agent, Bayram Tutumlu, who is claiming that a deal for Xavi to leave Barcelona for the Middle East is set to be completed.
Tutumlu is reported as saying:
“They assured me that he has received an offer to play for three seasons earning a net figure of €8.3 million for each one. I was even told that a contract had been signed, although I didn’t actually see it.”
Should it go through, this deal would represent the first step from clubs in Qatar to put the recent controversy surrounding the 2022 World Cup behind them and look to establish the Qatari league as a genuine footballing power.
It remains to be seen whether Qatar can follow the lead of nations such as the USA and Australia in attract some of football’s biggest names to their league on a regular basis, but luring a player who is still a key figure for Barcelona and Spain would represent an impressive start.
Whilst there is no official confirmation of Tutumlu’s claims, it does appear that Qatar is likely to soon begin making inroads into football’s collective consciousness.
