The Tri-series gets underway with hosts West Indies taking on Sri Lanka at Sabina Park in Jamaica, whilst other competitors India have to wait until Sunday for their first tie.
The three teams will battle it out in this one-day international tournament with the two sides with the best results progressing to the final on July 11.
The West Indies and Sri Lanka are already very aware of each other’s ODI capabilities having just come off the back of a warm-up match in preparation for the last ever Champions Trophy in England.
Victory in that match on June 4 went to the West Indians with an inspired bowling performance from Dwayne Bravo stealing the headlines, after the seamer took three wickets.
Despite the home side’s fall from grace in the Test arena in the last few years, the team from the Caribbean are becoming increasingly more of a one-day specialist force.
However, at the Champions Trophy it was the Sri Lankans that progressed to the semi-finals and not the West Indies – despite the hosts’ reputation.
At that stage Sri Lanka came unstuck when faced with a far superior India side, but campaigned veterans such as Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga still pose a dangerous threat at this level.
The Indians will certainly be the favourites for Tri-series glory but this match-up will certainly be a highly competitive affair.
