The Gunners head coach is considering not playing the France international in Wednesday night’s massive Premier League fixture with Liverpool at the Emirates stadium due to fears over the player’s fitness.
“It’s too early,” was Wenger’s response when quizzed as to whether the 26-year-old will be required by les Bleus against Germany next week.
“I would prefer him not to be called up. I might not play him against Liverpool because he is not ready to repeat games. I think it’s too early.”
Wenger asked Deschamps not to select Diaby for France’s World Cup qualifying double header last September to preserve the player’s fragile fitness, only for the France coach to ignore his pleas and play the midfield player in both matches, resulting in him then missing three months of the season through injury.
“They could have taken him but not played him because the guy has been out for a year and played four or five games,” said Wenger at the time.
“You have a breather, give him two weeks to recover completely. I think it was a mistake.”
