The manager is said to be wanting to sign both Benzema and Varane.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to raid Real Madrid in the January transfer window with the Frenchman setting his sights on Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane, reports Tuttomercato.
The French pair have both impressed at the Santiago Bernabeu and now Wenger wants to continue to show the Gunners’ intent by bringing in more world-class talent.
Club record signing Mesut Ozil arrived from Los Blancos on transfer deadline day in the summer for £42.4m and the boss is also said to be obsessed with Benzema and Varane.
The north London club certainly need to strengthen in both defence and attack, with the squad looking a little bare beyond the starting XI in these areas.
Olivier Giroud has been in fine form up-front so far this season – netting eight goals in all competitions – but beyond the 27-year-old there is only Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo as alternatives.
It’s a similar story in defence, as shown by the side’s last outing in the Premier League which ended in a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford at the hands of Manchester United.
With Per Mertesacker being ruled out with a stomach bug, club captain Thomas Vermaelen was drafted in for what was the Belgian’s first league start of the campaign.
The 27-year-old looked off the pace, but any injury or suspension to Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny would leave the skipper as the only alternative.
At 20-years-old Varane is one of the most exciting prospects in world football, whilst Benzema is a proven goal-scorer with 96 goals in 199 games for Los Merengues.
Cazorla admits he would have loved to see Luis Suarez at Arsenal.
