Arsenal manager tells official website Squillaci and Djourou free to leave
Arsenal defensive pair Sebastien Squillaci and Johann Djourou look set for a January exit after Arsene Wenger told the official website they were surplus to requirements.
The two centre backs have made just three appearances between them and will be offloaded to make room for new arrivals.
Arsenal have struggled at times this year with Wenger rarely being able to play a settled defence for consecutive games.
Despite that, Wenger was quoted as saying ‘Squillaci, if he finds a club, he will certainly go.”
The French international arrived at the club from Sevilla in 2010 with a high reputation but struggled to break into the Arsenal first team, finding his path often blocked by the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker.
The player has spoken of Marseille, Nice, Monaco and Ajaccio as some of his preferred destinations but Bastia are current favourites to seal the player’s signature having made enquires about the centre-half during the summer.
Swiss defender Djourou is said to be a target for Bundesliga outfit Hannover and they have already begun talks over a possible move. The German club are looking to plug a leaky defence after conceding 31 goals in the first half of the season, but it remains to be seen why they want Djourou considering the centre back was part of the Arsenal team that put in a woeful display in the 7-5 Capital One cup victory over Reading.
