John Wall led the scoring for the Wizards with 21 points with some explosive drives to the basket, and was one of six players who finished with double figures for the home team.
Despite a 31-point game from All-Star Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks’ fall to 31-16 for the season as they sit second behind the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference.
Having performed so brilliantly from beyond the arc for so much of this season, the Knicks suffered a taste of their own medicine as the Wizards went 11-of-20 from three-point range, while the Knicks slumped to 9-of-28. Trevor Ariza was most prolific, drilling five from seven from 3-point range.
Consistently allowing open threes and uncontested lay-ups, coach Mike Woodson was unsurprisingly angered by the performance.
“We were just there thinking we were going to show up and come out of here with a win, and it just didn’t happen. It was awful across the boards, starting at the top with me. We’ve got to be better,” he told reporters in his post-match reaction.
On a positive note, Amare Stoudemire continued his comeback from injury, playing more minutes and contributing 19 points. However, along with his team-mates, he’ll be hoping for a better result when the Knicks visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
