On this occasion, Spurs were hoping to persuade Brazilian club Internacional to part company with their highly-rated Brazil international Leandro Damiao for a fee of £20 million.
However, and not for the first time either, the club left their dealings too late to be able to force a transfer through, leaving the Portuguese with just the addition of midfield player Lewis Holtby from Schalke 04 as his sole January purchase
“We’ve approached the clubs from the beginning” said Villas-Boas.
“We approached Schalke [for midfielder Holtby] from the beginning, for example, of this January window.
“It was only when things start making more sense that you are able to conclude deals. If they make no sense then they can drag on.
“Things were very, very close, almost to the point of being agreed. I think it’s a question of a little more time, probably, that would have helped.”
