Tottenham really needed to win all their remaining games to be in with a chance of overtaking Leicester City and clinching the title, and based on their recent form that seemed more than possible. They dropped two points against West Bromwich Albion this past Monday night though, which look likely to prove hugely costly in the race for the Premier League.
It started brightly for Spurs, and really looked like it was going to be a question of whether West Brom could weather the storm and keep them out. Harry Kane looked dangerous and was getting into some threatening positions, but it looked like it just wasn’t going to be his day. He saw a couple of chances blocked, and one shot that looked destined for the back of the net somehow cannoned out off the inside of the post and back into play.
The home side finally got a breakthrough, but there was quite a bit of luck involved. A great free kick was put into the box by Christian Eriksen, with the delivery sending the box into chaos. Jan Vertonghen looked to get on the end of it, but in the end it was bundled in by Craig Dawson. The Belgian tried to claim it – which Dawson would have loved – but the replays showed there was no chance of that.
Tottenham had plenty of chances to put the game to bed, but much to the disappointment of Mauricio Pochettino they took none of them. And unfortunately for the title chasers things really changed in the second half, with West Brom looking rejuvenated and far more determined.
You’d argue that Spurs were still the better side, but every time they earned a set-piece West Brom looked dangerous. Naturally this is where they got their goal, with Dawson making up for his first-half mistake by scoring the equaliser. It was really sloppy defending by Tottenham, and Hugo Lloris was caught in no-man’s land as he came to claim a ball he had no hope of getting. Dawson headed into the empty net, and Tottenham instantly deflated.
Things were made worse by the fact that Eric Dier was forced off with an injury in the goalmouth scramble, and as hard as they tried, Spurs never really recovered.
Tottenham transfer news
There were a few half chances before the end of the game, but West Brom defended resolutely and didn’t really look too much like conceding. Leicester City can now win the title against Manchester United next weekend, while Spurs will have to settle for second spot.
