New Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has said that he wants England to qualify for next year’s World Cup finals that are taking place in his homeland.
The two countries clash in a friendly international at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night to mark the 150th anniversary of The Football Association and the man who almost became England head coach seven years ago was full of praise for Roy Hodgson’s team.
“Well, all of the great national teams that there have been will always remain great teams,” Scolari said in his pre-match press conference.

“All of them will have periods of innovation (i.e. evolution) like England is currently – and that is why they may be in a bit of a difficult situation. But I admire the pedigree that they have amongst their players.
“And I think that the Premier League gives them every opportunity to have a great national team. But we shouldn’t forget that, first of all, you have to achieve the first step – qualification (for the World Cup).
“I assume that England are going to qualify, I hope that they are going to qualify because the World Cup that we want in Brazil is with an English team and with a Portuguese team.
“But I’ve always said, including back in Portugal, you have to make the first step first, you can’t reach the big goals before you achieve the first step – and that is qualification… and I am positive England is going to do that.”
