Former assistant takes over the reigns at the drama-hit club.
Mark Thompson has been installed as the leader of the Essendon Football Club for season 2014 in place of the suspended James Hird.
The Dons were rocked by the news late in the season they were found guilty of using an illegal supplement program and were hit with a $2 million fine, loss of draft picks and the suspension of key personal such as Hird.
Thompson off the bat said he did not want to lead the side full-time in Hird’s absence saying the stress of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority had taken its toll on him.
However, the veteran off-field leader has had a change of heart and will look to try and guide the club through what is sure to be one of the hardest seasons in their history.
