Marco Antonio Rubio failed to make the weight on Friday ahead of his WBA middleweight title bout against Gennady Golovkin at the StubHub Center in California on Saturday night.
Rubio weighed in at 161.8 points, well over the 160-pound limit, and despite being given two hours to lose the additional weight, he was unable to do so and failed to step on the scale a second time.
Meanwhile Golovkin weighed in at 159 pounds but if he loses the bout, his world title will be vacated according to K2 Promotions managing director Tom Leoffler, the Kazakhstan fighter’s promoter.
Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) will still hope to become the first man to defeat Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs), with the latter looking to seal a 17th consecutive knockout victory in his 12th defense of his world title.
Ticket sales have been impressive as the West coast fight fans look forward to witnessing Golovkin’s notorious hard-hitting approach as he continues to establish himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
There has been a lot of interest and excitement surrounding Golovkin in recent years, and the 32-year-old will be available to watch on Saturday night in the UK with the fight being aired on Sky Sports.
