German midfielder looks set for White Hart Lane move
Tottenham are close to sealing a pre-contract agreement for the signing of Schalke star Lewis Holtby according to the Metro.
The 22-year-old German midfielder has already made it clear to his club that he is looking to leave in the summer once his contract expires.
The player has attracted the interest of a host of clubs in recent times, including Arsenal and Liverpool, but Spurs look set to have swooped in to secure a deal.
The Bundesliga star recently broke into the German national team, despite being eligible to play for England through his father. After being overlooked by the England youth setup, the player opted to represent the country from where he was born and grew up.
Spurs are looking for quality reinforcements in their squad ahead of an anticipated position in next season’s Champions League competition.
With no transfer free required, Tottenham see great value in the technically-gifted former Germany Under 21 captain. The former Mainz star can play in midfield or as a forward but is preferred position is linking the two together just behind the main striker. The diminutive player is said to be an Everton fan and has drawn praise from some who have compared him to former Toffees Peter Beardsley.
