Spurs ready to challenge London rivals for Barcelona star.
Tottenham have submitted a formal bid for Barcelona striker David Villa, according to Spanish newspaper El Confidential.
Spurs’ London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are both thought to be interested in the 31-year-old but Tottenham reportedly believe that a significant offer will tempt the Catalans’ president Sandro Rossell to sell the out-of-favour forward.
Villa has made just six starts for the La Liga leaders this season, with new boss Tito Vilanova preferring the likes of Christian Tello, Alexis Sanchez and Pedro as support for Lionel Messi.
But the Spaniard, who won the European Championship in 2008 and World Cup 2010, has still found the net five times, suggesting the goal-scoring prowess that secured him a £33m move from Valencia to the Nou Camp remains, despite sitting out 8 months of last season with a serious knee injury.
Rossel is understood to be keen to keep Villa until the end of the season but the Barca supremo could be tempted to sell the forward at the right price, particularly now a Premier League bidding war looks likely this month.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is short of options up-front, with Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor the only senior strikers on the club’s books.
With Tottenham mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League top four and Villas-Boas keen to progress in the Europa League, the Portuguese may feel that additional reinforcements are required in attack.
