Head-coach Andre Villas-Boas has publicly stressed that the club will not be forced into the transfer market for a striker this month, despite reports Jermain Defoe is carrying an injury and Emmanuel Adebayor’s current absence at the African Cup of Nations.
But the Portuguese is privately concerned that Spurs’ bid for a spot in the Premier League top four will flounder if the club do not spend before Thursday’s transfer deadline and the 34-year-old has persuaded chairman Daniel Levy to open his wallet.
Willian was a summer target for the White Hart Lane outfit and Levy flew to Donetsk in August to try to negotiate a deal but returned to North London empty handed, with Shakhtar refusing to budge on their £20m valuation.
The Brazilian winger has since stressed that he is keen to move to the Premier League and Tottenham are ready to offer €21m (£18m) for the 24-year-old.
Shakhtar’s continue participation in the Champions League, pus interest from Chelsea and a host of other European clubs, means a deal remains unlikely.
Meanwhile, the Lilywhites are also ready to offer €9m (£7.5m) for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo.
The La Liga outfit are desperate to offload the 27-year-old this month to ease their present financial woes and have offered the Spain international to a number of clubs in the Premier League.
Villas-Boas is believed to be unconvinced by Negredo but wants attacking reinforcements and Levy believes the player is good value for money, particularly if desperate Sevilla can be persuaded to accept a bid made-up entirely on installments.
