Spurs could beat rivals to German international.
Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as the frontrunner to sign German wunderkind Lewis Holtby.
The 22-year-old Schalke midfielder is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club from today and Spurs have reportedly jumped ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool in the queue of English suitors.
Holtby and his representatives have already informed Schalke he will be leaving at the end of the season, with the Premier League the likely destination given the player’s English heritage.

Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby is exactly the kind of player typically targeted by Tottenham’s chairman-cum-director of football Daniel Levy.
More than anything, the Spurs supremo loves a bargain – particularly a bargain young enough to have a significant sell-on value.
Holtby ticks both boxes. The 22-year-old has refused to sign a new contract with Schalke and is available to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign suitor this month.
The midfielder would then be able to join a new club next summer, for a nominal fee to be decided by a tribunal.
It would be a significant coup if Spurs landed the German international, not least because neighbours Arsenal and Liverpool are also interested in Holtby.
But there is a compelling argument that Spurs represent the best fit for the player. The club are looking odds-on to secure a Champions League place for next season and their failure to land top-target Joao Moutinho means there is still a pace in their midfield for Holtby, a talented and energetic player who loves to pass the ball.
While Arsenal are overrun with midfield pass-masters and Liverpool will struggle to secure any kind of European football next season, Holtby could flourish in a this young and talented Tottenham line-up.
