Youngster has impressed as a Premier League regular despite his tender age, and could move to Emirates Stadium or White Hart Lane.
Tottenham Hotspur could enter the race to sign Southampton youngster Luke Shaw, who is also interesting north London rivals Arsenal.
Shaw has been hugely impressive for the Saints so far this season, and is already a first team regular at the age of just 17.
Shaw’s positioning belies his tender years, and his ability to be in the right place at the right time sees him put in a number of interceptions and strong tackles each game.
Both Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas and his Gunners counterpart Arsene Wenger have had trouble at left back this season.
Tottenham lost Benoit Assou-Ekotto very early on this season to injury, meaning Jan Vertonghen has had to move across in his absence.
That in turn has resulted in William Gallas playing in central defence, which is far from ideal for the White Hart Lane outfit either, as the Frenchman is well beyond his peak.
As for Arsenal, Kieran Gibbs has been great at left full back – when fit.
The trouble is, that is less frequent than ever, and next in line to fill in are Andre Santos – a man who thinks the meaning of reliability is making the same mistake multiple times in a row – and Thomas Vermaelen, another centre back playing out of position.
Luke Shaw would be a sensible signing for both north London clubs, and neither team’s interest comes as an enormous surprise.
He might not get as much first team action at Emirates Stadium or White Hart Lane as he does at St. Mary’s, but he would no doubt be granted some game time given the other options for Spurs and Arsenal in that position.
