Gallagher entered the final day with a three-shot advantage over South Africa’s Richard Sterne and that was the way it ended at the Emirates Golf Club with a closing one-under par 71 enough to secure the win.
Gallagher was set for a nervy conclusion with playing partner Sterne having cut his advantage. That was until he holed a 110-yard approach with a wedge from the rough at the 16th for an eagle which took away the tension and ended the threat posed by the South African.
He was going one better in the event that in 2012 when he finished runner-up to Lee Westwood and the win ended a nine-year wait for victory on the European Tour since he triumphed in the Dunhill Links at St Andrews in 2004.
Gallagher’s 22-under par total was also a record-equalling score for the tournament, and the win moves him from 111 in the world to 60th in the rankings.
Felipe Aguilar, of Chile, and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen tied in third place five shots behind Gallagher, while defending champion Westwood was tied fifth.
