With the World Cup rapidly approaching, two of the most celebrated European nations face off in Madrid as Spain take on Italy with both coaches looking for answers.
Although this is billed as a friendly, both teams will be hopeful of putting on a strong performance ahead of this summer’s tournament.
While Spain are unsurprisingly considered as one of the favourites to emerge from Brazil victorious, the Azzurri will be quietly confident of their ability to produce a shock or two if they can get through a difficult group.
Diego Costa is expected to make his debut for Spain at his club home ground, although there was no place in the squad for Premier League duo Fernando Torres or Juan Mata.
Nevertheless, Vicente Del Bosque’s squad is full of talent as is expected, and the reigning European and World champions will be confident of putting on a morale boosting display.
Meanwhile, Italy are without Mario Balotelli as the AC Milan striker is sidelined with a shoulder injury, while ideal strike partner Giuseppe Rossi is also a long-term absentee but is still in with a chance of making the plane to Brazil.
In their place will likely be Turin duo Pablo Osvaldo and Alessio Cerci, while Gabriel Paletta could make his international debut in defence.
Cesare Prandelli has left Daniele De Rossi out of his squad after the Roma midfielder breached his ethical code of conduct, but despite a few experimental selections, it is a strong looking team.
“I think we [Italy] are not the best, but we can beat the best. I’m convinced of that. Spain, Germany, Brazil and Argentina, I’d say, are favourites for the World Cup,” Prandelli said in a press-conference on Tuesday, as reported by Football Italia.
While they may not consider themselves favourites, the Azzurri undoubtedly have the talent to cause Spain problems, and they will look to do so again on Wednesday night.
