The 2013 Wimbledon Championships have seen a good few shocks so far, but whichever of Marion Bartoli or Sloane Stephens triumphs in their contest today will not be a huge upset.
Bartoli, the 15th seed, faces the 17th seeded Stephens, and the match could be as close as the two players’ rankings.
Stephens, the young pretender, won her first round match against fellow American Jamie Hampton in straight sets, but each of her battles with Andrea Petkovic, Petra Cetkovska and Monica Puig has gone the distance.
Her movement and ability to lengthen points could prove useful in this encounter, whilst she has the ability to step up the court to volley home when required.
Frenchwoman Bartoli meanwhile is a former Wimbledon finalist, in 2007, but this is only the second time she has reached the quarter finals at SW19 since then.
She is now a veteran of the WTA tour at 28 years of age, and a stubborn player who battles for every point, her competitive edge and unorthodox playing style – with double handed forehand and backhand – could help her come out on top.
