The United great reveals why the midfielder was eventually sold to Real Madrid.
The relationship between Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham at Manchester United is over a decade of ups and downs that interested many football fans.
Beckham was part of the supremely talented youth team at United that also contained Ryan Giggs, the Neville brothers and Paul Scholes, before they graduated to become the core of the treble-winning side in 1999.
The midfielder also went from being a shy east London boy to one of the most recognised faces on the planet along with Spice Girl wife Victoria.
It was around this time that Ferguson says that a change happened in Beckham’s focus to football and eventually led to the former England captain’s sale to Real Madrid in 2003.
“When I got him at 12 years of age his great desire was [to play] some of the best football. He was a fantastic trainer, practiced all the time,” the great manager was quoted by the Times.
“And then of course, his life changed, when he married the girl from The Spice Girls [Victoria Beckham], yeah. And his focus changed.
“He got drawn into the – that celebrity status, you know? And for me, I’m a football man.
“He lost the focus.”
Beckham went onto have successful spells with Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, but never won the silverware that the Englishman enjoyed at Old Trafford.
Although Ferguson and the 38-year-old had a tumultuous relationship towards the end of the midfielder’s time with the Red Devils, that has clearly passed and despite the criticism, the Scot still has a lot of respect for the player he nurtured.
