With suggestions that WBC champion Adonis Stevenson is running scared of facing the Russian ‘Krusher’, Saturday will see Kovalev step in the ring with Pascal, a man who clearly isn’t intimidated by him based on their altercation at a press conference earlier this week.
Pascal is fighting on home territory and is out to prove a point that he can still mix it at the top level, but Kovalev isn’t shirking from the challenge as he insisted that if he is a true champion, then he can go around the world and to other fighters’ home towns and seal victories.
The 31-year-old champion impressed against Bernard Hopkins last time out, and he proved that he is more than just a knockout specialist as he dominated the fight through the 12 rounds against the ageless legend to claim a points victory.
However, he needs to be careful in this fight from the perspective of not underestimating his opponent and also not looking past him to a bout with Stevenson further down the line.
The challenger is game, awkward and athletic, and that could cause Kovalev early problems. Conversely, Pascal isn’t going to be able to deal with his power and his jab which will ultimately break him down as Kovalev looks to seek and destroy and work him out in the middle rounds.
Although all the talk is regarding whether or not the Russian will face Stevenson later this year, he will be looking to put on a show on Saturday night and will prevail by demonstrating his power and claim a stoppage win over his rival.
Coverage starts at 12.45 am on Sky Sports 1, although Kovalev isn’t expected to enter the ring until 1.30 am at the earliest.
