The Portland Trail Blazers arrive home facing a 2-0 series deficit against the San Antonio Spurs, and coach Terry Stotts knows they must win on Saturday night.
Stotts insisted last time out that his team have no chance if they don’t improve on rebounding and defense, and he will need to figure out a way of stopping the Spurs onslaught on home court.
Only 16 teams have come back from a 2-0 deficit to win a playoff series, but having split the regular season series 2-2, Portland will still have hope of at least making this match-up interesting.
However, San Antonio have dominated thus far after getting shared scoring across the roster, but ultimately they have been led by point guard Tony Parker.
The Frenchman is averaging 20.9 points and 5.8 assists as he continues to be aggressive and penetrate the lanes, while the likes of Tim Duncan and Thiago Splitter have produced relentless defense on LeMarcus Aldridge to limit the Trail Blazers.
Further, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has received great production from his bench through the likes of Marco Belinelli and Aron Baynes to name but a few, and that has been a key difference after they struggled their way through a seven-game series against the Dallas Mavericks.
Nevertheless, Parker is keen to avoid complacency as despite winning their two home games, he insists that the series really starts when winning on the opponent’s floor, and he expects a much more intense effort from their rivals in what will undoubtedly be a raucous Moda Center.
Aldridge, Damian Lillard and Nicolas Batum will need to do more if the Blazers are to get back into this series and make it competitive, while they will also need to guard against being blown away in the second quarter, much like they have been in the last two encounters.
