The San Antonio Spurs head to the Staples Center looking to not only extend their 11-game winning streak but to also continue their dominance over the Los Angeles Lakers.
San Antonio (50-16) secured a rout of the Lakers as recently as Friday with coach Gregg Popovich even afforded the luxury of resting key players such as Tony Parker and Tim Duncan for most of the game.
Unsurprisingly, it was another real team effort from the Spurs who had six players in double figures in the 119-85 win, as they went 13 of 27 from beyond the arc.
In contrast, the Lakers (22-44) have struggled badly against them without the likes of Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash while Nick Young and Jordan Hill are also ruled out for this encounter too.
Los Angeles have dropped five of six and are just one game better off than bottom of the conference Utah Jazz, and it promises to be no easier against the Spurs who reached 50 wins on Sunday for an NBA-record 15th straight season.
Popovich insisted that records don’t particularly mean much to his players at this point, and they are ultimately going for the biggest prize which heartbreakingly alluded them last season.
However, with a fully fit roster and Parker admitting that they are “getting our rhythm”, they look strong heading into the post-season and are still a half-game ahead of the Indiana Pacers for the NBA’s best record.
Parker, Duncan and Manu Ginobili will likely be rested if possible, but the Spurs will be confident in their ability of getting the job done without them given the depth and quality of their roster this season.
